EXPORTDEVELOPMENTCANADA(EDC)
Commercial / LEED Gold
Project brief
Broccolini Construction required site and landscape planning for Export Development Canada's new 19-storey headquarters in downtown Ottawa. As a high-profile federal Crown corporation building at Slater and O'Connor, the project demanded a landscape approach that met LEED Gold certification requirements and created a strong professional presence across multiple streetscapes. The scope was unusually complex — it included a 2nd level green roof, a 5th level terrace and green roof, an 18th level terrace patio, a ground level rear courtyard, and streetscapes along Slater Street, O'Connor Street, and Laurier Avenue. Managing landscape at multiple building levels simultaneously, within a compact urban form, required detailed coordination across the full design-build team.
Gino's role
Urban design, landscape planning, tender documents, and construction field review from concept through completion across all levels of the building and all streetscape frontages.
Outcome
Completed on time and under budget. GJA delivered multi-level landscape planning that achieved LEED Gold certification and established a professional, durable streetscape presence appropriate for a major federal institution. The layered landscape — from ground streetscape to 18th floor terrace — demonstrates GJA's ability to manage complex, multi-level urban projects within tight downtown site constraints.
